Get to Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu is one of Peru’s main tourist attractions, every year thousands and thousands of people visit the ancient Incan village. It is situated in the Cusco region at an amazing 2,350 metres above sea level! It is the most famous Incan archaelogical site, also known as the Lost City of the Incas, and since 2007 Machu Picchu is one of the seven wonders of the world!
So if you are in Peru, what is the best way to travel to Machu Picchu?

Well Peru is an amazing country and offers some beatifull natural wonders, in order not to miss on the incredible landscape, the best option is to travel by train.

On the website perurail.com, you can find some great deals specifically for Machu Picchu, for instance there is a package that includes the trip on a vistadome train and also lunch at the Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge.

A vistadome train is an incredible way to travel to Machu Picchu, as it has windows situated on the roof, thus allowing you to capture Peru at every angle.

The good thing about travelling by train is that the railway infrastructure is higly connected in the country so, as long as you are in one of the main towns it is easy to find the right train for you.

The site is situated on a mountain ridge above the Urubamba Valley, when travelling by train you will arrive just below the city, so in order to reach Machu Picchu at the top you have two options. Either by foot or by bus.

I personally suggest going by foot as it is an enjoyable experience, the trail is only 6km long and the hike will only take you about an hour.
If your not in good physical condition or just don’t feel like walking, then taking a bus is the more comfortable option, reaching the city in only 20 minutes.

Last tip to keep in mind on your travel to Machu Picchu, is to be aware of altitude sickness, known in Peru as Soroche. The best way to defeat this is by drinking Coca tea.
